Byron Katie Doing The Work

The work of Byron Katie seems to be spreading across the globe like wildfire.  This is because her basic premise that the Inquiry process can relieve human suffering and bring forth happiness in our lives has been found to be true for many of the people who have experienced “The Work”.  What makes this work even more popular is that it is a simple practice for anyone who tries it either individually, with partners or in a group situation. The invitation is to commit to following her format of Inquiry when there is any stress or pain in your life. By following the basic instruction found on her website (www.thework.com) and worksheets, the openness of the inner Wisdom inside each and every one of us frees up from what we habitually think and hold to be true into a newer and fresher awareness. One continues to stay and work with the beliefs and sub-beliefs until the area of tension is resolved. Patience and intention are very helpful, but the Inner Calling for Truth is what will lead you.

Anyone can do “The Work” if he/she takes the time to ask the following four questions and then turn them around:

  1. Is it true?

  2. Can I absolutely know that it is true?

  3. How do I react when I think this thought?

  4. Who or what would I be without the thought?

Thereafter, one finds three examples of how to turn around the original statement that is true or truer than the first.

It is truly your own state of mind that either brings you joy or despair.  When you question the thoughts of what is stressing you, you’ll usually find that your pain is from the seeking of love, approval or admiration from others or things in the material realm.  When you do “The Work”, you will notice that self-empowerment comes from letting go of your love story.  Katie says,  ““Your most intimate relationship is the one you have with your thoughts.”  When that relationship shifts, you have the opportunity to wake up to something more authentic and real.

I like to bring Katie’s Work into the Sessions when appropriate.  It can be very helpful when issues come up to have a look with fresh eyes.
